about
Higher Ground (2009)
After we went to war in Iraq, I obsessed over TV news. After several weeks, I was able to pull away from all of it. This song is the product of that insanity.
You read the morning paper and you listen to the news.
Watch the television just tryin’ to find some clues.
Lookin’ for the reason that we ever let it go so far.
Was it the lyric of the language that caused you to believe?
Or did you just convince yourself you couldn’t be deceived?
The difference doesn’t matter now ‘cause this is where we are.
CHORUS:
Dogs are barkin’ but the birds ain’t singin’.
Lights are flashin’ and the warnin’ bells are ringin’.
Can’t you feel the danger in the mighty storm that’s bearin' down?
The day is dark, the sky is heavy - I hear the river on the topside of the levee
So you better get your children to the safety of some higher ground.
A clever cut of fiction will substitute for truth.
The faithful here among us will never ask for proof
And always be respectful when arrogance is on display.
Watch what you are thinkin’, be careful who you doubt.
It ain’t exactly treason but Lord, it’s just about.
If fear is all we have to fear the time has come to be afraid.
(CHORUS)
When a bolt of hatred strikes and terror rolls again
Blame it on the different or the color of the skin.
Fan the foolish anger into a wind like none before.
'Cause it’s neighbor verses neighbor where they’re tradin’ teeth and eyes
For a hand-me-down religion with a scripture laced with lies.
The tempest that we’ve conjured up is just about to come ashore.
(CHORUS)
